Any effort to create generational change requires excavation of root causes. In Jjungo historically there have been many single parent households with mothers forced to desperate measures to provide food to feed their children. A quick survey of the village showed that economic development prospects were nearly non-existent. How can these mothers achieve their dreams of caring for their children’s basic needs while also breaking the cycle of suffering they themselves have been victim to since birth? Haven-Jjungo’s development programs are providing substantive opportunities for mothers to change the legacy for their children through a model farm and trade-training education. Haven has begun a piggery with many of the initial piglets now grown and pregnant ready to deliver our first litters of piglets. For months, mothers from Jjungo who desired to participate, have been working in teams to care for the pigs, each with daily shifts. When the sows deliver the piglets, and after weaning, each participating woman, depending on the size of her team’s sow’s litter, will take home 1-2 piglets to raise for her own family! The trade-training program is bringing skilled teachers to instruct mothers on sewing and tailoring, hair dressing, and soon will expand to culinary classes. Mothers can then take their creations and skills to the main roadways and larger towns, earning income for their households! Plans for future development include growing coffee, adding a chicken barn, and increasing the fruit and vegetable gardens.
